Everything You Need to Know About the Volksparkstadion Arena Hamburg

The Volksparkstadion is no stranger to major football matches. It hosted the 1974 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, the 1988 UEFA European Championships, and the 2010 UEFA Europa League final. First opened in 1953, the stadium enjoyed a major upgrade in 2000, when it was transformed into a venue fit for elite football matches, with a matchday capacity of 49,000.

When it comes to getting to the Volksparkstadion, public transport is definitely your best option, as no public parking facilities will be available at the venue. Don’t worry, though; the public transport network throughout Germany is notoriously excellent, and this is certainly the case in Hamburg. Wherever you’re staying in the city, you’ll be able to access the stadium via S-Bahn or bus easily – we’ve got more information on this below.

On matchday, the stadium gates will open three hours before kickoff. As well as your mobile Euro 2024 ticket, you’ll also need to bring along a valid form of ID. Only bags of A4 size and smaller can be brought into the Volksparkstadion, and power banks that are no larger than your phone. Can umbrellas and professional cameras are prohibited, but small, collapsible umbrellas are allowed.

Bear in mind that smoking is prohibited throughout the venue, and this includes the use of e-cigarettes and similar.

How to Get to the Volksparkstadion

The Volksparkstadion is located just over seven kilometres from the centre of Hamburg to the northwest of the city. If you are driving to the venue, you can access the stadium via the A7 autobahn, taking the Hamburg-Volkspark exit. Simply follow the clear signage to the stadium.

As we mentioned above, getting around Hamburg via public transport is exceptionally easy. Your best bet is to take the S-Bahn on either line S3 or S21. Catch one of these trains either from the city’s central station or at one of the several other stops throughout Hamburg. Alight at either Stellingen or Eidelstedt: both are approximately a fifteen-minute walk to the Volksparkstadion. On matchdays, a shuttle bus runs regularly from Stellingen station, starting from around two and a half hours before kickoff. A shuttle service also serves Othmarschen station, which is on S-Bahn line S11.

Alternatively, you could take the bus to the Volksparkstadion. Take the number 22 bus from U-Bahn station Kellinghusenstraße to S-Bahn station Blankenese. Alight at the Schnackenburgallee stop, and it’s about a ten-minute walk to the venue from here.
