There are lots of adjectives that can be used to describe the San Siro, but the one that first comes to mind is “iconic.” This amazing stadium hosts over 80,000 football lovers, with AC Milan and Inter Milan both sharing the stadium in Italy’s top flight, Serie A.
AC Milan actually built the San Siro stadium, and formed an agreement with Inter Milan later to share the venue. AC Milan has an incredible fanbase, known as the Rossoneri. These passionate fans scream their hearts out every match, and if you’re traveling for sports to the San Siro, you have the chance to join them!
In this guide, I’ll explain everything you need to know about how to get to the San Siro for AC Milan games. I’ll cover different ways of getting to the stadium, and share some travel tips for AC Milan fans heading to the San Siro for the first time.
Different Options for Getting to the San Siro
Although AC Milan lost last year’s league to their cross-city rivals, the atmosphere at the San Siro will never be beaten. There are lots of different ways you can get to the San Siro, depending on where you’re traveling from. To see AC Milan play at the San Siro, you can get to the stadium by:
- Driving
- Biking
- Walking
- Taking the subway
- Taking a taxi
- Taking a bus
A lot of locals get to the stadium by scooter, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this unless you’ve already had some experience riding a scooter – scooter traffic in Italy can be pretty intense!
Driving to the San Siro and Where to Park Near the San Siro
The San Siro is located about 6 kilometers to the west of the main part of Milan’s city center. Driving to the San Siro is an option, especially if you don’t feel comfortable navigating Milan’s public transport system. Parking around the San Siro isn’t the easiest, but there are a few specific parking lots that are open at the stadium on game days, including designated parking for traveling football fans of the away team.
If you’re driving to the San Siro to see AC Milan, Take the A1(Autostrada del Sole). After the Melegnano barrier, take the Tangenziale Ovest towards Malpensa and exit at Milan Via Novara. Then follow the signs for San Siro. Alternatively, if you’re taking the A4 (Milan-Turin), at the Milan north barrier, take the Tangenziale Ovest towards Linate and exit at Milan Via Novara. Then follow the signs for San Siro.
If you’re driving on the A4 (Milan-Venice), at the Milan north barrier, continue towards Milan, take the Milano Certosa exit, and follow the signs for San Siro. On the A7 (Milan-Genoa), at the Milan south barrier, take the Tangenziale Ovest towards Malpensa, exit at Milan Via Novara, and follow the signs for San Siro.
In terms of where to park at the San Siro, located on Via Tesia, there is an area is for away fans’ cars and buses. You need a parking pass or away end ticket to access it, and you can buy parking passes online. The Park Centauro Stadio San Siro is another option; located close to the stadium, this car park is staffed during events.
Taking a Bus to the San Siro for AC Milan Games
Another option is to take the bus to the San Siro for an AC Milan game. You can take the Line 49 or 64 bus from Piazza Tirana (direction San Siro). If you’re on Line 49, get off the bus at P.Za Tirana San Cristoforo – it’s about a 20-minute bus ride and the stadium is right next to the bus stop. If you’re on Line 64, you can get off at Via Lorenteggio Via Inganni and walk 5 minutes to the San Siro.
Using the Hop-On Hop-Off Tourist Bus to Get to the San Siro in Milan
If you’re traveling for sports to Milan and staying in the city for a few days, one of the best ways to get around and see all the city’s top highlights is with the Hop-On Hop-Off bus. Although it’s a lot more expensive than a regular bus, it’s also a lot easier. It lets you explore the attractions you want to see the most, and skip the ones you don’t. You can just hop on the next bus when you’re done – it’s really easy to navigate and doesn’t take too much planning.
San Siro is one of the stops on the Hop-On Hop-Off bus route in Milan. The bus only runs until 8 pm, so if you’re going to an AC Milan game at the San Siro in the evening, you might need to arrange a different transportation method to get back to your hotel after the game. Choose from one-day, two-day, or three-day tickets.
Taking the Subway to the San Siro to See AC Milan
The subway is probably the easiest and cheapest way to get to the San Siro to see an AC Milan game. Milan’s subway system is really well connected right across the city, and it’s easy to navigate between different lines without getting (too) lost.
Taking the Underground to the San Siro Stadium
If you’re coming into the San Siro from Milan’s city center, you can take the Line 5 subway (Purple, to the San Siro Stadio) from the Domodossola FN station to the San Siro Ippodromo station. It’s about a 5-minute walk from there to the stadium – you’ll see it slowly start to appear in front of you. You can also take the Line 1 subway (Rho Fieramilano) from the Conciliazione station to the Lotto station, though you will have to walk about 15 minutes after that.
Keep in mind that the metro does get really busy on game days, so make sure you’re ready to sardine yourself onto a busy train, and make sure you allow plenty of time to get to and from the venue. Milan’s subway tickets cost €2.20 for a single ticket that’s valid for 90 minutes. This ticket can be used for multiple trips on the metro, trams, and buses within the Mi1, Mi2, and Mi3 zones. You can also buy an unlimited day pass for €4.50.
Taking the Tram to the San Siro
As well as the underground trains, you can also take the above-ground trams around the city. The routes aren’t as extensive, but you do get to see more of what’s going on around you! The best way to get to the San Siro via tram is to take Line 16 from Piazza Fontana (toward the San Siro) and stop at the Piazzale Axum terminal. The stadium is just a 3-minute walk from the station.
Biking or Walking to the San Siro for AC Milan Matches
If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try biking or walking to the San Siro? You’ll see a lot of locals riding their scooters, so make sure you’re alert for these whether you’re on a bike or walking – they might not stop for you!
Biking to the San Siro
Many people in Milan ride bikes, and there are car parks around the San Siro where you can park your bike safely during the game. Use Google Maps to find the best route for getting to the San Siro on bike based on where in Milan you’re located.
Walking to the San Siro in Milan
Another great way to get to the stadium is simply to walk. If you’re a sports lover traveling to Milan to see AC Milan, I think walking is one of the best ways to get to the stadium. It’s a great chance to see more of the city, and it’s easy to stumble into anywhere that takes your fancy, including some of the best restaurants around the San Siro!
Because the San Siro is located quite far from the main city center of Milan, it would take at least 90 minutes to walk to the stadium. I’d recommend either walking part of the way and then taking the metro to the stadium, or taking the metro part of the way and then walking to the stadium.
Personally, I think walking first is the better option – this will let you see more of Milan before you get on the metro. There aren’t that many attractions directly around the San Siro, so if you’re taking to the metro to the stadium entrance you’re not really missing out on anything.
Can you Take a Taxi or Ride Share to the San Siro?
Uber isn’t as popular in Milan as it is elsewhere (and only UberX and Uber Black are offered), but taxis are still an easy way to get around. You can take a taxi to the stadium – there are dedicated taxi ranks set up on game days to make pickup and drop-off go more smoothly. A taxi from the city center of Milan out to the San Siro takes 10-15 minutes and costs around 16 Euros.
