For any football fan, a visit to Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park is a must – a pilgrimage to one of the world’s most iconic stadiums. Renowned for its electrifying atmosphere and the “Yellow Wall” a match day here is truly unforgettable.

Check out our guide here to learn how to get tickets and how to make the most of your visit to the Signal Iduna Park.

To fully embrace the local football culture, knowing where to enjoy a pre-match pint or a post-game drink is essential.

With over 80,000 fans filling the stands each game, Dortmund boasts a fantastic selection of nearby bars. Whether you’re a seasoned supporter or visiting for the first time, here’s your guide to the best pubs and spots to drink near the legendary home of BVB!

Best Pubs Near the Signal Iduna Park

On match day of Borussia Dortmund seems to turn into a party. Many fans buy a beer from a local shop and head to the stadium. Drinking on the streets on Germany is allowed and you’ll see lots of fans doing just this.

Before the match the area around the Signal Iduna Park is really lively. There is always loads of food and drinks stalls. I normally meet friends near the stadium and we grab a beer and bratwurst and soak up the atmosphere. With 80,000 people attending each home game there’s always a lot going on!

The guide below gives you an overview of my favourite pubs.

Strobels

Strobelallee 50, 44139 Dortmund

Strobels is the top spot for pre- and post-match fun as it’s right next to the Signal Iduna Park. Enjoy a party atmosphere with a special grill menu, 12 large screens, and a massive screen showing all the action. Celebrate with a live DJ after the match and enjoy local beers like Brinkhoff’s No.1, Schlösser Alt, and Hövels Original on tap. Sometimes, if I don’t have match tickets I reserve a table and watch the match on one of the 12 big screens here so I can savour the matchday atmosphere.

Stadion Rote Erde Biergarten

Strobelallee 50, 44139 Dortmund

Next to Strobels, in the shadow of the Signal Iduna Park, the traditional Biergarten at Station Rote Erde is an ideal spot to enjoy the vibrant matchday atmosphere. Once the home ground of Borussia Dortmund, from 1937 to 1974, this stadium now hosts the club’s reserve team for their Liga 3 matches and becomes a beer garden on match days.

Here you can grab a beer from one hut and delicious grilled sausages from another, providing a perfect blend of great food, drinks, and football history. It’s a great place to watch fans arrive, most wearing their vintage BVB shirt or a typical “Kutte” jacket.

Westfalenschenke

Kreuzstraße 87, 44137 Dortmund

Just a relaxed 15-minute stroll from the stadium, this bar is the perfect place for matchday beers and tasty food. Co-owned by Dortmund native and former Borussia Dortmund star Kevin Großkreutz, it’s decked out in the team’s signature black and yellow, creating a vibrant football-themed atmosphere. After visiting myself, I was impressed by the wide beer selection, numerous TVs, and delicious food. A fan favorite, it’s a must-visit spot, so arrive early to grab the best spot! Born and bred in Dortmund, Großkreutz knows exactly what locals and football fans crave!

Mit Schmackes

Hohe Str. 61A, 44139 Dortmund

If you looking to break up a walk to the stadium, this spot is ideal. Just 20 minutes walk from the city centre and 20 minutes from the stadium is another pub owned by former Dortmund player Kevin Großkreutz. Mit Schmackes is a pub that blends traditional German pub culture with a strong footballing heritage. The walls are decorated with BVB memorabilia and even some of Kevin Grosskreutz’s old shirts. It’s a great spot for die-hard Dortmund fans who want to experience local football culture up close. Expect a solid lineup of German beers on tap, complemented by a menu of hearty German dishes.

Best Pubs For Football Fans in Dortmund

Brauhaus Wenkers

Betenstraße 1, 44137 Dortmund

In the city centre the brewery pub, Wenkers, is a place I always take visitors to. It is a pub favoured by locals but big enough that you can usually find a table. The food is great, they serve local specialities and the beer is tremendous! On a match day this place can get full, but the atmosphere is always friendly and you’ll soon get talking to BVB fans. The traditional brewery has been serving Dortmunders since 1430 and offers a rich history alongside its beverages. Wenkers is a 15 minute U-Bahn ride from the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund city centre.

The Londoner

Sonnenstraße 74, 44139 Dortmund

“The Londoner,” is a British-style pub that has quickly become a popular spot with Borussia Dortmund fans since its opening in November 2022. This pub is known for its authentic British atmosphere, complete with colorful beer taps behind the bar. Sports travelers will appreciate the wide selection of 24 draft beers, including local Dortmund brews like Hövels and Bergmann, as well as British and international options. The pub also features weekly trivia nights and screens Bundesliga and Premier League matches, making it a vibrant hub for sports enthusiasts and beer lovers alike.

The pub is about a 20 minute walk from the Signal Iduna Park and gets very busy on matchday.

Das Kraftstoff

Augustastraße 2-4

“Das Kraftstoff,” is a well-known pub, especially popular for its expansive beer garden across from the iconic Dortmunder U. This outdoor space is perfect for enjoying local Dortmund beers, either on tap or bottled, while watching football under the shade of beer tents during warm summer days.

Inside, the pub offers more entertainment with a foosball table that sees lively matches throughout the week. With its combination of sports viewing, games, and a wide selection of local brews, “Das Kraftstoff” provides an ideal setting for sports travelers looking to experience Dortmund’s vibrant pub culture.

‘Briefkästchen

Landgrafenstraße 166, 44139 Dortmund

This small and quaint pub is a must visit. The pub is covered in Borussia Dortmund memorabilia, scarves and photos that hang from the walls and the ceilings.

The Briefkästchen is in Dortmunds trendy Kreuzviertel and is always full of BVB fans. The landlady is always friendly and happy to see new people visiting her pub. On matchdays there is usually a BBQ where traditional football good, Bratwurst and Frikadellen are prepared for hungry BVB fans.

Hiiccup

Wittener Str. 205, 44149 Dortmund

Hiccup, has been in business for over 25 years of history and boasts an impressive selection of malt whiskies, bourbons, Irish whiskeys, and Scotch, alongside a wide variety of cocktails.

Known for its traditional Italian coffee and it’s classic burgers and tender spare ribs, with a menu rounded out by pizzas, salads, and more. Sports travelers will find plenty to do with steel dartboards, a 9ft pool table, and foosball, while the spacious terrace offers a perfect spot to relax. Since the 2022/23 season, Hiccup has been broadcasting all BVB matches live.

Abseits

Saarlandstraße 111, 44139 Dortmund

“Abseits,” is a highly regarded local pub, known for its warm atmosphere and excellent service. It’s a popular spot for football fans, with multiple screens and a large projector providing an ideal setting to watch BVB games or stop for a drink on your way to the stadium. The pub doesn’t serve food, guests are welcome to bring their own or order from nearby eateries.

Overall

When Borussia Dortmund are playing the whole city seems to stop and watch the game. If you’re lucky enough to have tickets or want to experience the magic of match day, with fellow supporters in a bar this guide has got you covered is essential. So grab a drink, cheer for Die Schwarzgelben, and make your visit to Dortmund one to remember!
